Rationale for the skill: As Jon Kabat-Zinn famously stated when describing mindfulness, âYou canât stop the waves but you can learn how to surf.â Thatâs what we are learning to do with this one. When weâre feeling an unpleasant or uncomfortable emotion or sensation, we want to let it be. The less we do, the better. When weâre in doing mode, weâre swimming against the waves. When weâre in an allowing mindset, weâre riding it.
Dr. Alan Marlatt, a psychologist and researcher in substance use, coined the term âurge surfingâ in the â80s to describe riding out the urge to use drugs or alcohol. He recognized that keeping people in the present moment (versus lost in their stories) helped enormously, and people learned that their urge was temporary and passed. The skill is to learn to let the urge peak and pass on its own. The less attention we give it, the faster it will pass.
If you donât want to feel like youâre controlled by the shit in your head, this next exercise is for you. Yes, itâs hard, but so are many aspects of life!
