Rationale for the skill: As Jon Kabat-Zinn famously stated when describing mindfulness, “You can’t stop the waves but you can learn how to surf.” That’s what we are learning to do with this one. When we’re feeling an unpleasant or uncomfortable emotion or sensation, we want to let it be. The less we do, the better. When we’re in doing mode, we’re swimming against the waves. When we’re in an allowing mindset, we’re riding it.

Dr. Alan Marlatt, a psychologist and researcher in substance use, coined the term “urge surfing” in the ‘80s to describe riding out the urge to use drugs or alcohol. He recognized that keeping people in the present moment (versus lost in their stories) helped enormously, and people learned that their urge was temporary and passed. The skill is to learn to let the urge peak and pass on its own. The less attention we give it, the faster it will pass.

If you don’t want to feel like you’re controlled by the shit in your head, this next exercise is for you. Yes, it’s hard, but so are many aspects of life!
